The Early Days
We started our alpaca adventure in 1999 with two bred
females, one a huacaya and the other a suri. We have learned a lot
along the way, like you really do need a catch pen. Our first two
girls figured out very quickly that a pasture and an open shed meant
that those two leggers don't have a clue. It wasn't very long before
a small barnyard was incorporated into the scheme and life was simpler
once again. Then came the toenails, alpacas don't have hooves, just
two toenails on each foot. Just trim the tips and you on your way,
right? Wrong, our girls knew they were dealing with amateurs and
promptly became leaners. Leaning does not make it easy to pick up
a foot for trimming without you or the alpaca taking a tumble. In
the summer of 2000 I attended a Marty McGee T-Team Alpaca Training
Clinic, (actually Alpaca Owner Training Clinic). I learned a lot
in those two days and after that our alpacas actually came to enjoy
us almost as much as we enjoy them. The trick is simple: think like
an alpaca.
Building a Business
After deciding to be alpaca breeders, we had to make
decisions about our goals. One of our goals is always breed to improve
our stock. We choose males to enhance the female's positive traits
and improve the weaker traits. We continually add new bloodlines
to our herd. We have found this to be a very competitive business,
and we are continually upgrading our stock to stay in competition.
Offering excellent quality alpacas and services are
also part of our business. As breeders it is very important to us
to serve the needs of our customers. We provide exceptional alpacas,
and we will do our best to provide you with the information you
need to care for your alpacas.
Becoming alpaca owners and breeders was the right
decision for us. We are a small farm and plan on keeping our herd
at around 20 alpacas. One major change that we have made is that
we now concentrate mainly on suris. We have invested time, money
and top quality bloodlines in our herd in both our males and females.
Raising both huacayas and suris does not allow us to use those qualities
efficiently and still keep our herd size small. We are in this business
for the long haul and committed to breeding the best for the benefit
of our clients and the alpaca industry. We offer exceptional quality
at fair market prices.
